He is severely under groomed but I can't afford to pay someone to groom a dog that is not mine! so I'm doing it myself! luckily he is such a sucker for attention, he loves being brushed and loved. Even having only trimmed his feet he looks so much better! Now onto the belly and tail! I will look up how to trim ears... as he gets terrible mats in his ears. Today I took my Golden to vet's for a trim (I specifically told them I did not wanted him shaved, just half an inch off cause his hair had grown a lot). I used to work as an office manager in a dog salon and recently got a Golden myself. Every, and I mean every, groomer I have taken her to in Sioux Falls has shaved her coat. One told me, "Oh, we use a long blade!" I winced and said NO SHAVING and they shaved it with a long blade anyway. I finally threw up my hands, bought a grooming table, and started learning to do it myself. It's a process. I'm finding the hardest part is the tight, round paw and that scissoring the top of the paw is the way to get it. The more I do it myself, the better I get at it.

Reading through this, I'm glad I am doing it this way and glad I'm not the only one who doesn't want their dog shaved. I have a new groomer and I am sure it will be more helpful if I use the correct terminology. I do not like a shaved golden either and the "short and tight" you pictured is what I have had pictured in my mind all along. It will keep them looking good, cool and still protected from the sun. Thank you so much for posting this information. I am sure it will helpful to others looking to keep their Goldies looking good. My wife and I own 2 goldens, a 6 year old and a 3 year old. It took us a while but we had finally found a groomer we liked and have been going there ever since our older golden was 2 years old. The business we took them to was owned by two sisters who recently had a parting of ways so one of the sisters (the one we preferred to have take care of our dogs) left, she had been the one who knew our dogs and also how we liked to have them cut. My wife dropped our dogs off yesterday asking for a basic golden haircut which is what we have always called it when bringing them to that groomer and is comparable to your basic all over trim, and when she came home from picking them up was almost in tears because they gave both of our dogs a cut comparable to your golden puppy cut which was very different from what my wife had grown use to seeing them like. It wasn't until I found your blog and showed her that a lot of goldens get cut that way and it may even be better for them seeing as summer should be coming soon, that she really relaxed about it and realized it wasn't as bad as she thought. It also helped seeing the different types of cuts for goldens because next time we take them we to the groomer we can explain better how we want our dogs to look. So thank you for taking the time to blog about your experience as a groomer, and I hope you know that it has helped other people out by reading about it.Matt from Rhode Islandnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6861555359944928813.post-26367535107204630582015-01-25T05:34:30.396-05:002015-01-25T05:34:30.396-05:00Hello, I have stumbled on this webpage and got a l...Hello, I have stumbled on this webpage and got a lot of information from it. My goldie is 11 and half years old and she gets very hot in the summer. I have tried twice to cut (shave) her hair and she has ended up looking pretty uneven. I liked your explanation of what to do with a goldie and it is a pity I did not look sooner before I hacked her hair. Hopefully it will grow again. I have used the meds and washed and cleaned the house. But now he itches a lot. All 3 of my dogs do. (All different breeds) anyway I was going to shave him down to see better and wash his skin. I had cut his belly way down already but no where else. I don't know what to do and now I am not so sure if I want to take him in to a groomer. I hate to see him like this. I shaved my sheltie and it grew back and looks the same so I thought I could do the same with him. Any help would be great. I took him to be trimmed down and the groomer recommended shaving him, which I always thought made a goldie look silly. After the initial shock of the dog now looking like a lab he is much more happier. He quit panting and turned into a puppy, very playful. that haircut took 6 lbs off of the dog. I would definitely do it again next year because of the change it made in the dog. I am about making the dog happy and not worrying about what he looks like.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6861555359944928813.post-21967695808079789682014-07-03T14:07:09.765-04:002014-07-03T14:07:09.765-04:00Great article! He is also a very sensitive boy, and if his ears are shaved, or his stomach is clipped too closely he ends up with barber's rash, once ending up on meds because his ears became so inflamed. We have tried multiple groomers over the years, and have basically given up because Hoover ends up in the kennel for 8 hrs because his coat is so thick, and he is intolerant after awhile. Now we brush daily, wash frequently and trim his toes and nails only. We would like to trim his backside and his chest, which is so thick that my entire hand disappears when I put my fingers on his skin. Is it possible for us to just trim these heavy hair parts without the full Monty? Since we live on a lake in NH, Hoover lives in the water and fields. High maintenance, but magnificent. I love that you don't shave the Goldens...wish we had that kind of groomer near us! Thanks for this blog...love it! The owner and I are very close friends and he allows my beloved Golden to swim as often as I have time to take him. It's GREAT relaxation for both of us. I do, however, have his hair shaved once or twice a year because of his frequent swimming. It's my feeling that blow drying our dog's longer hair after every swim surely irritates his skin. With a shorter cut, he's dry very quickly (almost dried with but a few towels) and we're BOTH happy about that.

I fully agree with a previous post; our dog seems to enjoy his "sporty" new look after a trip to the groomers! He thinks he's really "fast" afterwards and sprints about like a Greyhound! It's hilarious to witness! She had been totally shaved a few days before she came to us. We have let the fur grow out but time has come for a trim! She has 3-4 inch long hair on top of her head that sometimes stands up like a punk,or a powder puff, or lies down flat over her head like the dumb blonde she is. Brush or comb the fringe so that it is hanging evenly down from the back of the leg. Now you can take your scissors and, starting at the back of the ankle, scissor up towards the elbow. You can take off as little as enough hair to just neaten, a 1/4 inch, 1/2 an inch, half the fringe, to all of the fringe off. Whatever length you want.
I hope that this helps. :)
Lisa, MFFMy Furry Friendshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03957566282521723511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6861555359944928813.post-44623691969095577732014-02-13T15:41:09.202-05:002014-02-13T15:41:09.202-05:00One of the things I love about our golden is the &...One of the things I love about our golden is the "fringe" on the back of his front legs. As long as your Doodle is not matted there is no reason why they should not groom your dog exactly how you would like. You need to call around and talk to some groomers and question them about how they groom Doodles.
Another possibility is.....You could call around and find a groomer that will let you walk-in and wait while they trim the hair around the corner of the eyes and trim back the bangs some so that your Doodle can see again and you can see his beautiful eyes. This way you could try the groomer out, and ask questions with your dog right there, to see if that particular groomer would groom your Doodle the way YOU want. At least you will get around the eyes trimmed even if you decided that that groomer is not for you. I have had people do this to me every once in a while to test me out before they make a full grooming appointment.
I hope that this helps,
Lisa, MFFMy Furry Friendshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03957566282521723511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6861555359944928813.post-81248055526892582042014-02-07T22:22:49.883-05:002014-02-07T22:22:49.883-05:00Hi,
