About Me:

I am a professional Pet Groomer. I have been grooming for 28 years. This Blog is a kind of diary of my work. I wish I had started years ago, writing some of the experiences I have had while grooming. Most days are fun, some can be sad, some can be just down right crazy. If you are a pet owner and come across this blog, I hope it helps you understand how your pet is groomed. If you are a Pet Groomer, I hope you can relate to some of the stories. Maybe even learn a grooming tip or can leave a friendly grooming tip for me. There is always something to learn, no matter how long you have been grooming.

They Finally Got Here!

Over a month ago I ordered a couple of dog grooming magazines and a dog grooming guide book.
It took them more than a month to get here.

Why?

They were coming from Japan.

Yes, I ordered grooming magazines and a book about Japanese grooming.
I love the Japanese grooming.
I love how different and 'out of the box' their grooming is from American grooming.

The two magazines are filled with great pictures of really nicely groomed dogs, with descriptions on how to groom them.

The only problem is...I can't read them. lol

But, I can look at the pictures!!

The Grooming Guide book was a big disappointment.
Most of the pictures looked like the same dogs over and over again and they were not very well groomed on top of it.

Here are some of the dogs from the magazine.

Do you think that one of my Schnauzer customers will let me groom their dog like this cute guy?

I mean...come on....wouldn't every Schnauzer owner want big, bushy boots?

I do love that face. :)

Now, this is the way to groom those Schnauzers whose owners want you to keep the eyelashes.

Or, how about a Westie with this cut....at least I am pretty sure it is a Westie.

He is in the Terrier part of the magazine. :)

The face on this Poodle is just too cute.

Fuzzy boots on this one too.

I really want to try this on a poodle.

At least the owner won't be able to say; "he looks like a poodle."

At least not any 'American' Poodle. :)

I think he looks like a stuffed toy.

Not a fan of the ears, but I love the tight, round head.

Of course you could always frame that tight, round head with a long beard and sideburns.

There is just so much that you could do with a Yorkies hair, and they would still look adorable.

Long hair left on one side of the head and one ear...such a glamor girl.

Talk about a little head and long ears, on a big full body.

Obviously the words 'balance' and 'in proportion' are not used in the Japanese grooming world.

Do you think that if I put some of these pictures up in my lobby, I would get a customer who would want me to try one of these cuts on their dog?

I think that I would...eventually.

There is only one problem...

The owners who would want these cuts, would be the owners whose dogs don't have the hair for the cuts.

Oh well.

It's nice to dream anyway. :)

Happy Grooming, MFF

  1. Wow! im right there with you being a fan of the japanese style! they are so out of this world! but my god would we ever be able to come close with the coats we get in everyday grooming!
im sure your familiar with Boo the pomeranian? he has a huge facebook following, and as much as I love Boo he is the bane of the grooming life! people just cant seem to understand why i cant get their pom (which less face it is prob half pom and a foot taller than it should be) to look like Boo!
Some day our Boo will come!

    1. Hi Jessica,
This website is the only one that I found that would mail to the US. The grooming Guide book is still available on their website, but it seems that the magazine changes, because the two that I got are know longer available. There is one new magazine that I didn't see before. I am thinking about ordering that one too. They must change them up every month. They do take a while to get to you. Mine took a little more than a month to get to me.
I was personally disappointed in the 'dog grooming guide' book. But I really like the 'DOG' magazine. They are a little expensive, but they are big and very nicely made.
      Here is the link:

I am not sure if the link that I have here is for ordering in America. If it is not, there is an area to click in the upper right hand corner of the webpage to get to the American site.
I hope that this helps you. :)

  4. Those are some crazy looking grooms! I don't think all those boots would go over very well where I live with all the snow we get. Most people want really tight feet to help with snowballs. And yeah, there is definitely not much balance and proportion there - some of them look like game board pieces, like in the game Sorry!

  5. When I read this post this morning, there was something familiar about the style, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Once I got to work, I realized it's because just yesterday I saw video of Mi-Kis for the first time, and they have that same small head, big body look. How weird.

I am speechless. I really don't know what to say, other than I will stick to my hand washing the dogs. :)

  7. i love japanese grooming too! when i was in grooming school, my instructor was japanese and introduced me to the magazines! <3 - i love doing the very round doughnut moustache on poodles - and the owner doesn't know that I'm doing japanese style grooming.

  8. Hi My Furry Friends,

I read your blog off and on as a dog lover, not a groomer. It's so interesting and informative! :) Anyway, I studied Japanese in college and if you ever want a translation of something in your books, feel free to email me: suki.na.neko@gmail.com

Keep up the fun posts! -Catherine

    1. Lisa, this is actually clever spam. They're the reason I had to start moderating my comments. Just FYI. Toronto dog groomer, dog groomer Toronto, Mississauga dog groomer... They're all the same account leading to the website of a mobile groomer up there. This comment is vague enough to look relevant, but usually the comments don't relate at all to the post.
