About Me:

I am a professional Pet Groomer. I have been grooming for 28 years. This Blog is a kind of diary of my work. I wish I had started years ago, writing some of the experiences I have had while grooming. Most days are fun, some can be sad, some can be just down right crazy. If you are a pet owner and come across this blog, I hope it helps you understand how your pet is groomed. If you are a Pet Groomer, I hope you can relate to some of the stories. Maybe even learn a grooming tip or can leave a friendly grooming tip for me. There is always something to learn, no matter how long you have been grooming.

Angry FOR the customer

I have a very strict rule in my shop.
No one does anything to a dog that the owner did not ask for.

Today I had a good customer of mine come in with her Sheltie.
The first thing she said was, "Brody had a bad hair cut."

Bad haircut?
When?
Where?
NOT HERE?!

No, Brody had been to a kennel while his owners went on vacation.
When the owners checked 'Brody' in, they were asked if they would like 'Brody' to have a bath before they picked him up.
His owner said, "yes, just bathe him."

When 'Brody's' owners came to pick him up, they were shocked and very upset when they saw him.
Physically, he was fine but, all of his feathering had been cut off.
The rear feathering was gone.
The front leg furnishings were very short.
His belly was very short.
And
His tail was extremely short!

'Brody's' Mom and Dad were so upset that the owner of the kennel called them the night they picked 'Brody' up to apologize.
The kennel owner explained that the groomer thought that she was doing the owners a favor by cutting back 'Brody's' hair because he was so thick and had so much hair.

Now, 'Brody' does have a very thick coat, and he always seems to have more than his fair share of undercoat.
BUT
'Brody's' owners love his coat left natural.

I have been grooming 'Brody' for 4 years, and his groom has always been the same.
Bath, comb out, and ONLY trim the feet.
DO NOT touch his feathering.

Even when I was new to grooming, I never just did whatever I wanted on a customers dog.
If I thought something would look nice on their dog, I ALWAYS got permission first.

This is 'Brody' when he came in.
We put him straight in the tub.
He use to have beautiful long furnishings.

This is 'Brody' after the bath and blowdry.

This is what his tail looks like now.

His owners want his coat to grow back in.

It was growing in very uneven.

I used thinning shears to try to soften the sharp scissored line, and make it look a little more natural as it grows back in.

I am not sure what happened to his tail.

'Brody' rarely ever has any mats in him.
My file says that I only found mats in him one time in 4 years, and that was between his legs.

Once again, I used thinning shears to try to fix the tail so it would grow back evenly.

'Brody' is older now, and his coat had never been cut before, so I told the owners that they would have to give it a little time.
I am not sure it will ever grow back to as long as it was.

Don't get me wrong, the other groomer did not do a bad job.
I trim out lines on Shelties all of the time.

My issue was that she DID NOT ASK the owner if it was okay to do, BEFORE she did it.

I have owned 2 Collies.
I never cut anything on them other than their feet.
If I had left them somewhere and someone decided that they were doing me a favor by shortening my dogs coat without asking first...

I would blow my mind at them.
I was angry for the owner.

I have always felt that the owner is paying me.
They are the ones who have to live with the dog.
So, as long as they don't ask for anything harmful, I will do what they want on their dog.

Of course, sometimes owners ask for a cut that looks awful on their dog.
That is when I pray as they are going out the door.

"Please God, don't let them tell anyone where they got their dog groomed!"

My Daughter...The Groomer

It all began 19years, 3months,and 4days ago.
My daughter was born.
I groomed up until the day before she was born.
My water broke around 6 am.
She was in no hurry to enter this crazy world.
After 17 hours of labor, and 3 hours of pushing, she finally made her appearance.

My little groomer was born.

I had a small screened in room, with a crib and a changing table, in my shop.
My grooming table was right next to that room.
My daughter was at work with me everyday.
She has not known a day in her life without a dog.

As soon as she could walk, the grooming shop became her playground.
She loved being there everyday.
She loved to play in the cages.

She loved carrying the empty gallon shampoo jugs all around the shop.
We taught her to know when she could touch a dog and when she couldn't.
She loved to sit and watch everything that was going on in the shop.
Of course, that was between watching her Barney Show.
Barney came first.

Those Barney songs hunted me for years.
God help me, they still pop in my head once and awhile.

Whenever we would let her, she would help with the dogs.

I taught her how to brush a dog.

We taught her how to blow dry a dog.
Her favorite thing was to blow the air onto her face.

When my daughter was 7 years old, she started grooming the family dogs.

When my daughter was 10 years old, my husband broke his foot and could not bathe for me.
I was booked, and desperately need a bather.
My daughter begged and begged me to let her step in.

Now I have to say, I had a really hard time with this.
I knew that my daughter could handle it.
She had been bathing our dogs for a few years, and was great at it.

My issue?

She was 10.
These were customers dogs.
I am a real stickler for getting dogs really clean.
These were customers dogs.
She was 10.

I gave in.
Till Dad was better, I said.

She was wonderful.
That was the start of her professional bathing career.

Of course, that was not enough.
Now she wanted to learn to groom.
Once again, our dogs became her guinea pigs.

She took to scissoring, like a fish to water.

For her 11th birthday, I gave her a tack box full of her own clippers, scissors, blades, combs, and brushes.
She was so happy.

I still would not let her groom our customers dogs.
I just could not get past her age.
Even though I knew she was better than most of the other groomers that I had hired over the years.
She was not happy with me, but, boy our dogs looked great.

When she was 12, almost 13 years old, my last groomer left grooming for physical reasons.
I did not want to go through training another groomer, only to have them leave a year or two later.
My daughter begged me to let her become my new groomer.

I finally gave in.

This was her first customers dog, 'Star'.
She still grooms her today.
'Star' is now 16.

She has wonderful scissor skills.

She grooms any size dog.
She loves to challenge herself.

In 2004, she decided to compete at Hershey's Groom Expo.

She was 13 years old.

She used a customers Cock-a-poo for the competition.

She still grooms 'Shorty' also.

I was so proud of her.

I home schooled my daughter from 4th-8th grade.
When it came time for High School, I gave her the choice of going to regular High School or continuing Home Schooling.
She choose to work full time and Home Shool on the weekends.
She graduated from a correspondence Home School program with an A- average.

In 2009 she competed at Hershey's Groom Expo again.

She competed with her Shishon, 'Bentley'.

She hopes to compete in Creative in the near future.

Here is some of her work.

Golden, before and after.
Hand scissored.

I can't tell you how very proud I am of the work my daughter does.
She is a talented and caring groomer.
I could not have dreamed, 19 years, 3 months, and 4 days ago, that my daughter would follow in my foot steps.

Now if only I can keep my two legged customers from driving her crazy and making her leave this career.

Groom Expo Photos

I am back from Hershey.
What a great time.
It is always great to go to grooming expos and meet and talk with other groomers.
You come home with new things to try, shampoos, scissors, brushes, ect.

Most of all you come home rejuvenated and ready to groom again.
At least I do.

My daughter, son and I left for Hershey Thursday after work.
We got there in time to go to the Internet Social.

We had a really good time.

I had to leave the room to talk to my 10 year old, he called in a panic, because it has just sunk in that we were not going to be home for a few days.

When I returned to the Social, I found out we had won one of the raffle prizes!
Yah! A gallon of Espree Silk Shampoo.
Dawn did a GREAT job.

The next couple of days were spent shopping and shopping and shopping...

I spent too much.
Really.
Way too much.
My Debit card was crying.
And..I took my Credit Card for the first time.
Bad, bad, bad.

Well, at least I won't have to buy shampoo for the next six months.

Anyway, here are just some of the great grooms.

I always love watching Lisa and Olga groom.

I want another Poodle.

The Bichons that come into my shop sure don't look like that!
I don't have a single customer that could keep up with that coat.

I want this dog.
Beautiful!

Friday night we went to the Wild Wild West Party.

We spent Saturday in seminars.
I always say, if you learn at least one new thing, it was worth the money.

After 26 years of grooming...
I learned 3 new things!

We also went to the 'Are You Smarter Than Judy' luncheon.
It was fun.
Judy is retiring.
I will miss her.
I loved her seminars.

Sunday was the Creative Contest.
After 3 year of competing in creative, I took a break.
Well, not really.
I screwed up the cut while doing prep work a couple of months ago.
Had a PMS moment, got upset, and clip her down.

There is always next year.

Anyway, here are some before and afters.
They were FANTASTIC!
The presentations were great too.

They were on the floor in front of the stage.
Half way through the competition they would not let anyone take photos.
Even without a flash!
Everyone had to take pictures at the end.
IT WAS MADNESS!

We had a great time.
Now I have to sort out all of my goodies.
And try NOT to think about how much I spent.
Next year the Credit Card stays home!
The credit card stays home...the credit card stays home...the cred......
