About Me:

I am a professional Pet Groomer. I have been grooming for 28 years. This Blog is a kind of diary of my work. I wish I had started years ago, writing some of the experiences I have had while grooming. Most days are fun, some can be sad, some can be just down right crazy. If you are a pet owner and come across this blog, I hope it helps you understand how your pet is groomed. If you are a Pet Groomer, I hope you can relate to some of the stories. Maybe even learn a grooming tip or can leave a friendly grooming tip for me. There is always something to learn, no matter how long you have been grooming.

Tuesday's Tip #19 Clipping a Belly

Most of the time I clip a dogs belly by lifting one leg, turning him and lift the other leg.

Sometimes there are dogs who can't lift their legs very far, or they have bad legs or knees.

When you can't lift the leg far enough, you can't see what you are doing.

So, I lift the front legs to expose the whole belly, and start clipping.

NOTE: When clipping a belly this way, do not run the clipper straight up against the tuck-up skin.

As you can see in the picture, I am running the edge of the blade right along side the tuck-up skin.

Turn the clipper and clip sideways, skimming lightly, and lifting off at the tuck-up.

Did that make sense?

I hope so.

On male dogs, I always inform the customer that I will be clipping the belly hair high up on the belly.

This is to keep the male dog from peeing on himself.

All of my male dog owners love this.

On my female dog customers, I only clip the belly up about as far as the penis on this dog.

You will also notice that the belly does not look skinned.

I like to use a light touch on the belly, and leave it slightly fuzzy.

This is what the belly looks like from the side.

The dog is only half groomed in this picture. :)

Below is a very short clip of me clipping the belly on the wild puppy I talked about in my post yesterday.

I felt he would be easier to control clipping his belly with this method.

He was very good.

Happy Grooming, MFF

  1. Hello again! I hope this doesn't sound too gross...but do you have any videos of doing sanitary trim (anus) ? I've always done it lightly skimming side to side (outwards) with a 10, but usually this causes the dog to "booty-scoot" for a couple of days. Any advice?
